Can't complete the install of Win XP on VB

Post by Test_A »

Another reason why I'm asking this is because logged in or not, the search engine can't find jack anymore, I've typed in so many words close to my issue and it ends up with 0 results. I get tired of seeing that so now i'm logging in so you know I personally can't rely on the search engine for this fourm bored anymore. :( and it's not my web browser I'm pretty sure.

My other issue is I can't install Win XP on VB. Was cd I turned into .iso format and i don't know what went wrong...
I have real Win Xp Pro (2002) cd, legit, Ive successfully installed on a older comp, although I can't take pic because I have no webcam.
So on a Vista Home Premium Host the Guest would be Win Xp Pro but when I, make a fresh new Guest, with settings adjusted and fresh .vdi storage made for it. I figured VB can only run .iso files and I made an .iso file of Win Xp Pro (2002), testing to see if I can install it in VB as an image instead of bootable CD.

I power on the new guest, and of course selected the source as the .iso on my desktop on host. it boots up normally, shows EULA agreement, then starts loading all files as if it is going to install, then gets to the part 3 where it says press enter to continue installing XP Pro and I press enter, mind you still in bio like state on VB. then it comes up with bogus issue "this cd is not valid" and I know it's not running form cd it's running from .iso. So if Vista or Win7 can and have installed normal from an .iso Why not XP on VB?

I have 4gb DDR2 ram-
3.4ghz dual core cpu-
plenty of storage-
VB version I'm using is 3.2.6 r63112-
I'm welling to answer any extra question you might have to help me fix this problem with VB.

Use google or any of the other major search engines to search here, see example below:
install win XP on Vista host site:forums.virtualbox.org

Next have you tried using the actual install CD/DVD? VirtualBox supports real CD/DVD drives as well.

Thnx for showing me an alternative for searching the forums. :)

Yes I have just recently tried with the cd and it preforms the same results, loads, I agree to EULA, loads more files, goes to step 3 and then says can't read disc or its not valid, so what is going on here? The disc is near perfect condition is it Virtual Box halting the installation? even on my Host which is Win vista x32 just clicking the auto-play on the cd rom drive brings up the winxp install splash screen. I've tried in setting using Win Xp x64 and just Win Xp settings on VB but it doesn't seem to effect whats going on.

Can you post a screen shot of the error saying it is invalid?

Before the EULA agreement it has to load all the driver files and important ones which it does off of the .iso format and straight off the cd, yet it continues to say it can't read the cd which is not right because if it couldn't why would it setup the driver files off the cd in the 1st place or the .iso?

It's simple, you are trying to install an Upgrade version of XP, so you either need a previous version of Windows, or the full install disc. Once you have loaded one of those discs, let the installer read it, then it will ask for the first disc (the upgrade) and it will continue.

Oh interesting, lol I thought it was the original disc but if it's an upgrade version OK.

So is still possible to load an older version of windows like 98 or 95 in VB then reset on that Guest machine with the Win XP Pro upgrade selected to run at boot in order to get Win XP on VB?

Just load the old Windows disc when asked, so it verifies you're qualified for the upgrade procedure.

Cool it works, strange way of installing, i never worked with upgrades before, thanks for the help, right when it ask for the previous windows 98 cd, i loaded the disc it continue to the partitioning. I then ejected the disc and swapped back to the .iso version and installing ect all the way up to log in and desktop was successful. Any other issues with Win XP as guest, well be reported in different section of the forums. Thanks :)
