Ubuntu 10.10 under Windows 7 host

Post by smokinjoe2122 »

Sorry if this topic is under the wrong board, but I am new to this forum.

I am running windows 7 under amd64 3500+ (2.21 ghz) (using 32 bit windows version though) with 2 gb Ram, and 1024+ mb video. I had Ubuntu 10.10 running as host previously, and windows 7 guest, worked absolutely great. But due to the windows 7 requirements at my school, I wanted to flip flop. Now I am running Ubuntu 10.10 under windows 7 and it is horribly slow. Almost to the point of not being able to use it. I gave it half the ram, and 256mb of video, it's own partition under windows. Still super super slow. All compiz effects are turned off, guest additions are installed. Can anyone help me? Why is this thing running so slow? My "supposedly" slow netbook with a single atom processor with hyperthreading runs ubuntu like a dream, with transparent menus, emerald, and compiz effects.

If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. Also a big no no to dual boot, since for some reason the motherboard hates my sata hard drive and takes a year to boot up.

So what is the controller you are using for the guest? Also I guess you understand that Ubuntu as host handles memory a lot better than Windows. Probably why it works for you faster that way. I know it does for me.

Thanks for the quick reply -

I am using the SATA Controller AHCI for the .VDI

I wish I could boot Ubuntu and have a guest Windows 7, but my "required' windows 7 class doesn't approve lol

Try switching the Ubuntu guest to SCSI and see if it runs a little better. The big problem is with 2GB of total ram and the way Windows uses memory you can't give any more than 1GB to the Ubuntu guest. Start the guest and run top to see what swap is doing, and I bet the Windows task manager is pegged.
Post the guests log file (as an attachment) if you need more help.

Thanks again for the reply. I changed the host controller to SCSI, helped a little. The task manager in Windows is basically using all the ram (2mb free), but the cpu is not really pegged. CPU is using about 50% with word, WMP, and chrome open. System monitor in Ubuntu is 35-50% cpu usage when idling. Not using any swap what so ever.
