VM appliance -> VB equivalent?

Post by SimplyPurple »

Hi
I am aware of a VM Appliance that will allow the user to install VM Player on their home (PC) and use the appliance to connect to their work PC.
This appliance contains all the applications necessary to connect to the work PC except the ability to wake up the PC.

My 'grand idea' would be to locate a piece of software that would be able to wake up the target PC; convert the VM appliance to the VB equivalent; add the aforementioned piece of software and create an updated VB vdi.

What tools do I need, apart from VB, to achieve this, please?

VM appliance is just a VM, that can be exported and imported.

Two ways to achieve this with VBox:
1. OVF/OVA: File->Export Appliance -or- File->Import Appliance

2. Just copy the the whole VM folder to a different host, then, Machine->Add
This method has the added benefit to backup/restore VMs with snapshots.

NOTE: In VBox there is no such feature to remote wake up or shutdown another PC.

Thanks for your reply, Technologov.

I was thinking of a utility that would run in the vm rather than something in VB itself.
