USB Problems: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)

I get this error whenever I try to mount a USB flash drive on the guest. Has anyone any clue how to fix this? The symptoms follow:
- First try to mount the device does nothing.
- Second try brings up this error.
- Once in this state, the VBox GUI sort of freezes. After shutting down the guest, the GUI still shows the guest as running. None of the information on any of the guests is available (They all have 0Mb RAM, no video memory, no storage attached and so on with all of it). Restarting the GUI solves this.
- In this state also, anytime I focus away from the guest by pressing the host key, it reminds me that I can click on the guest to regain focus. It is possible to tick a "don't show this message again" box, but that does nothing, the message keeps coming every time I press the host key.
- It is really annoying!
Any suggestions?
PS - I googled the error and have found it occurs on Ubuntu hosts, and can be fixed by adjusting users and groups. No can do this on Mac, though..
