USB Problems: NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED (0x800706BE)

Post by BabThooka »

I get this error whenever I try to mount a USB flash drive on the guest. Has anyone any clue how to fix this? The symptoms follow:

- First try to mount the device does nothing.
- Second try brings up this error.
- Once in this state, the VBox GUI sort of freezes. After shutting down the guest, the GUI still shows the guest as running. None of the information on any of the guests is available (They all have 0Mb RAM, no video memory, no storage attached and so on with all of it). Restarting the GUI solves this.
- In this state also, anytime I focus away from the guest by pressing the host key, it reminds me that I can click on the guest to regain focus. It is possible to tick a "don't show this message again" box, but that does nothing, the message keeps coming every time I press the host key.
- It is really annoying!

Any suggestions?

PS - I googled the error and have found it occurs on Ubuntu hosts, and can be fixed by adjusting users and groups. No can do this on Mac, though..

Having the same problem:
  • MacOSX 10.7.1
  • VirtualBox 4.1.2 (with both usb extpack and guest-vb-tools installed and up-to-date)
  • Windows XP SP3 Guest
At first: Since 4.1.2, the info-window doesnt show the installed virtualbox version and r0 (problem while reading version-info?)

My real problem is the same as posted above: I've configured 2 USB-filters, after that I've started the guest and after successfully boot, I've plugged in the usb-device: The filter doesnt work, the device is mounted under MacOS (tested with a Kangaru Defender Elite and a MicroSD -> USB).

I've tried to click on the device from the usb-list (from guest) and it aborts with the message "NS_ERROR_CALL_FAILED".

So, I can't connect any USB-device to my guest.

I hope someone can confirm that under MacOS.

SOLVED!

Oddly enough in my quest to find a work around, I created a folder on my desktop to use a transfer point from Ubuntu to XP Guest and enabled file sharing... Once the SAMBA thing was installed and totally by coincedence, I had a flash drive plugged in, I booted my XP Guest OS and the flash drive was detected, installed and is working. I pulled my hair out for weeks trying to connect the dang flash drive and simply enabling file sharing solved the issue... GO FIGURE!

My thinking is that once file sharing was enabled, it must've altered permissions on whatever the USB link was dependent on. Im know expert on this though.

Anyway Hope this helps.

My host system is Ubuntu 11.04 Natty
My Guest is Windows XP Pro
