Hi,
Hardware : Dell D830
VirtualBox : 4.0.0 r69151
Host OS : OpenSuse 11.3
Guest OS : Windows XP SP3
Real Ethernet h.w. : NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
Trouble : Ethernet Ctlr invalid in XP : An Error occurred during installation of the device. The data is invalid.
I installed the guest via VBox and a mounted ISO image as supplied by my employer HP.
I tried all ethernet card emulations VBox allows, NATed or Bridged, device manager shows them with a yellow dot and exclamation mark.
Ipconfig show nothing at all as expected given the above. Am I to install the real Dell drivers for the NetXtreme card?
My ehternet connections work perfectly from within my Linux host.
The only VBox int'fce I see in there is the vboxnet0 one. Am I supposed to see others in there, if so, what are there names?
Which config is supposed to work with a Dell D830? Any fellow Dell D830 users around?
Gtz,
Guy.

Please read chapter 6 of the User Manual to understand the network types. Read chapter 3 to learn more about the VM settings in general.

Re: Dell D830 : no network adapter in XP guest
Sasquatch,
I've read the document over and over but there's nothing specific about the ethernet driver installation within a guest.
There's a lot about configuration but that comes into play once you've got at least your interface recognized.
Maybe there's sth specific to the image my employer supplied. They've included some VB scripts that automatically run to make installation for dummies possible when installing on the physical machine.
I'll go over the docs once again should I have missed sth..

Re: Dell D830 : no network adapter in XP guest
Hi,
see manual
the guest doesn't see the real NIC hardware, select one of the emulations that is supported by your guest in the VBox guest network settings (easy to miss: click on something "expand" or "extended" ... german is "Erweitert")gzelck wrote:Real Ethernet h.w. : NetXtreme BCM5755M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express

Re: Dell D830 : no network adapter in XP guest (solution)
All,
I got it fixed.
Solution was to download the drivers for one of the emulated vbox ethernet cards or the virtio drivers.
My employer omitted all the drivers that were not Dell specific from his DVD iso image, even the standard ones.
Windows gave an error that wasn't clear about what exactly was missing.
I've opted for the Intel(R) PRO/1000MT and installed that. I've got my network card in good health now!
Is virtio solid enough to use it, it's been hinted that i would be quicker?
Let's see what I can do next networkwise.
Virtualbox really looks nice and choosing configuration options is realy neath and easy, well done to the team.
