xp guest crashes

Hi all,

I'm struggling with an annoying problem for a week or so now, maybe some of you have any suggestions.

I am using Tresco navigation software aboard a tugboat, there are 2 XP-only laptops that run this program. It requires a USB dongle and our NMEA instruments are connected to a serial to USB convertor. I can emulate the dongle and use Tresco on the xp machines without a problem.

Now here comes the problem: my laptop is a Ubuntu 10.04 machine, I installed the Virtualbox from the repository's (OSE version), then installed XP in order to run Tresco.

Tresco worked in the virtual xp (dongle emulated) but could not acces the instruments on the USB ports, I Learned that another version of Virtualbox provided USB support, so I installed Oracle's VM 4.0.0.

In first order I just added the xp machine that was created by the OSE VM and it started. But as soon as I start navigation software and/or dongle emulation the virtual machine instantly crashes, reboots.... And then recovers from an error...

So I deleted the machine and fresh installed (& updated) XP. Same problem. It does not matter if guest additions are installed or not.

If I reinstal OSE VM and add the machine created by Oracle VM 4.0.0 emulation and Tresco work flawless, but I have no USB support.

Any Idea's where to look ? Any body ?
Help appreciated

Install the Extension Pack How to install Extension Pack
make sure you put your login in the vboxusers group
In a host terminal run this:

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>
Replace <your username> with the name you use to log in. Type your user password when prompted.
