Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
Hi there,
I recently installed version 4 of VB and found out that none of my Virtual machines that were 64bit worked. On the other hand all my 32 bit machines worked just fine.
So i tried to make a new Virtual machine to install Debian 64bit version 5.0.7.
The start screen appeared and i choose install, after that an error occurs.
I attach the log and png files here so you can try to figure out the error.
I have to say that the same error occurs on all 64bit linux distributions.
I post some additional information about my host OS:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 6.1.7600 build 7600
Processor: AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-core 2507 MHz
RAM memory: 4.00 GB, 3.25 Usable
The guest system has the following:
2 CPUs, IO APIC is on
16 MB Video memory
One IDE controller on the CD device and one SATA controller for the HDD.
Network: Adapter 1 on Bridged adapter
Serial port disabled
USB controller enabled but USB 2.0 (EHCI) controller is disabled

Re: Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
The ability to run 64-bit guests requires that you have a 64-bit cpu and that the cpu and bios has hardware virtualization and it is enabled.

the OP log tells it is enabled:Perryg wrote:The ability to run 64-bit guests requires that you have a 64-bit cpu and that the cpu and bios has hardware virtualization and it is enabled.
@pkonstae there is a version update to 4.0.2 available, did you already try that?Logs.zip wrote:Code: Select all

Re: Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
Yes but with the 32 bit host "Package type: WINDOWS_32BITS_GENERIC" and the fact the the bottom of the log shows it is really unhappy about running 64-bit, the OP needs to make sure that everything is setup properly. Also nested page may be an issue and should be shut off or an update to 4.0.2 may fix that.

Re: Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
Don't be sorry. you have a valid response. Something that should work is not. This can be due to the new structure and error checks as well. Not sure until everything is checked. Lots have changed in the new release!

@kissson,
Did you try disabling nested paging?

Re: Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
The strange on the whole case is that on VBox 3.2.12 worked like a charm... I will try disabling nested paging as well and see the results...
@fixedwheel
Yes i tried updating to 4.0.2 but with the same errors, i can't run 64bit OS's...
Thanks both of you for your responses...

Re: Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
That was the solution. Disable nested paging on guest machine...Perryg wrote:@kissson,

But how does that happened on 4.0.2? If my memory serves me right on 3.2.12 it was working with Nested paging on...
I will run some more tests and if i find weird behaviour i will report it as a bug. Thanks for your replies...

Re: Problems with VirtualBox 4 and all 64bit guest systems
The source code changed *a lot* in version 4.0.* and things get messed up no matter how careful you are. I am sure that this will be fixed soon.
