can't install ubuntu server guest

I can't seem to install many of ubuntu servers; tried 9.10, 10.04, 10.10 both 32 and 64 bit. My hosts are windows 7 home premium 64 bit as well as Snow Leopard.

Virtual box on both hosts are latest; on windows its 4.0. on mac it's 3.2.12 i think; not sure but i did do check update on that imac and it didn't find any. Since i am posting this from windows i can't be sure.

Way back when ubuntu latest server was 9.01 I installed 64 version of it on imac; at the time it's an older virtual box but i used the latest virtual box at that time and i think it was about 1 year ago. That installed virtual box guest is still working fine in snow leopard.

Now It just can't seem to install any ubuntu server and newer virtual box versions.

The point it fails is 'Installing nic-modules ...' The blue screen (inside virtual box) then flicker many many times and eventually i get the message 'killed' and then that message starts to scroll the entire screen.

I tried many different settings. For example i tried with a different nic adapters. I also tried to disable nic adapter. But nothing works and it fails at 'installing nic modules'

Also I didn't have problem installing ubuntu desktop versions.

Thanks for any suggestions.

turns out 3.2.12 isn't the latest for os x. Windows is the recent fresh install and I have been using mac virtualbox for some time and for 3.2.12 'check update' is only saying that there is no update for this major version. I am not prepared to test 4.0 for os x for now.
