want to get a sony handycam to work in guest OS

Hi all,
Win7 host, winxp guest. I have an older sony camcorder that under xp supports the ability to stream video over the usb connection. I'd like to get this working under the guest OS. Not sure if i can, or how to do it. I tried creating a USB filter after i plugged the cam in - didn't seem to do anything. I don't really know what the usb filters are for so maybe i did something wrong.
Can anyone give me some pointers?
