I have VirtualBox 4 on Arch Linux, with a Windows XP Guest. This has been working great, but I wanted to try and install directx for inventor. I set msconfig to boot in safe mode, and restart. XP boots into safe mode, but after a short time, it simply restarts, and goes back to the VirtualBox screen, and tries again. I cannot get it to boot normally, because of the msconfig option. Why isn't safe mode working?
Here is the log: http://pastebin.com/udhUvgNJ
(dont know if its the right one, there is 4 logs, I did the one labeled VBox.log)
Safe Mode

Re: Safe Mode
To boot Windows into safe mode you press F8 at boot. If you get this to actually boot now, I would undo what you have done in the msconfig menu and see if it will boot normally before you even worry about the guest additions in safe mode.

Re: Safe Mode
I am not to worried about getting it to boot normally (several snapshots, backups). I just want to get Safe Mode to work. Any idea whats wrong?

Re: Safe Mode
No idea except I have never used msconfig to boot into safe mode.
Have you tried using the F8 key like I suggested and see if it will actually force a proper safe mode boot?

Re: Safe Mode
the issue is related to the use of ICH9 and SATA, the restart occurs due to a Bsod that occurs if you try to restart the guest machine.
until this is fixed you will want to shut down the entire guest and then enter safe mode directly after starting it.

Re: Safe Mode
@squall leonhart,
Well the log says they are using PIIX3-ide so unless I have missed something the ICH9 problem should not effect this issue.

Re: Safe Mode
ah, well in that case, there was an issue i had with the beta's rebooting by themselves regardless of the chipset, but i haven't had it happen in the release build just yet.
