Debian Lenny Won't Boot in VBox 4.0.0
Hello everybody. I am a newer user of Virtualbox, and I have several VMs on both of my host OSes on this computer. However, my main problem is with Debian on Windows 7. After upgrading to 4.0.0 from 3.2.12, I discovered that my Debian install (which needed to be reinstalled anyway) would no longer boot. I deleted that VM and created a new one. When I popped in my disc to reinstall, everything went well until the kernel was booted. Suddenly, it froze and nothing happened. I tried every option on the disc with the same result: the kernel wouldn't boot. The disc has worked before and is undamaged, so I assume the problem is with Virtualbox. What's going wrong?

Did you also install the Extension Pack? How to install Extension Pack
Or turn off the USB in the guest settings.

Re: Debian Lenny Won't Boot in VBox 4.0.0
I was able to boot the installed Debian in single-user mode and watched it hang-it did hang on something marked "USB", but I no longer have that VM so I don't remember what it got stuck on. I downloaded the USB extension pack on the download page and it installed successfully. However, Debian still froze while booting the kernel.
I also disabled USB in Debian-I never was able to get it to properly work, anyway. However, Debian STILL hangs on boot from the CD. I'm not sure what to do next.

Look in the main VBox program and under machine click show log.
If there is a log file post here (as an attachment).

Re: Debian Lenny Won't Boot in VBox 4.0.0
Try this. Lower the RAM in the guest settings to 768MB and see if it will boot.

Re: Debian Lenny Won't Boot in VBox 4.0.0
Lowered RAM to 768 MB and even 512 MB. No luck at all.

Re: Debian Lenny Won't Boot in VBox 4.0.0
Hey,
I have exactly the same problem.
Debian netinstaller hangs on 'Booting the kernel'.
But I still got no solution for that...

first could you please do what the message suggests?Commifreak wrote:Debian netinstaller hangs on 'Booting the kernel'.
Code: Select all

... and though you do not have the same host OS you are running on the same CPU as magicbus:Commifreak wrote:I have exactly the same problem.Code: Select all

Re: Debian Lenny Won't Boot in VBox 4.0.0
hmm... i guess its something with your CPU ... and what if you disable AMD-V? (same Acceleration tab)Commifreak wrote:Nested Paging is now off - no change..
consider opening a ticket in the bugtracker (separate account needed)
-edit-
though i never had problems with 2.6.18 kernels (e.g. Debian Lenny, RHEL/CentOS 5), there is a warning about in the manual => http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch12.h ... inux-buggy
-edit#2- ups! sorry for confusing Etch with Lenny (time flies...) its Etch using the 2.6.18, Lenny is 2.6.26

Ok, I've read the page - so its kernel-related - Simply solution: VB 4 & Debian 5.0.7 are no friends...
