I'm setting up a new 64-bit Linux host and a virtual network of several new 32/64 bit Linux/Windows guest VMs at home.
I'd like to use VB 4, mainly to avoid starting with a (now) deprecated "way of doing things" in VB. However I've got the impression from here, perhaps unfairly (people tend to report problems more than successes), that 4.0 is not yet fit for purpose.
Fair comment? How many of you have started off new hosts/VMs with 4.0 and found it reliable (at least to similar levels as 3.X )?
Safe to use 4.0 for new projects?

4.0 works reliably for me.
Try it and see if it works for you.
The reason it does not work for some people, is because they have different Host hardware/software, and they did not participate in the BETA testing.

Good to know. Though I have different Host hardware/software, and didn't participate in the BETA testing...

This is logical isn't it. If you buy a car and usually it works fine, but some of the people have a problem and go to official mechanic for asking for advice or for asking to repair the non-working part. And now you go to the mechanic and you are asking: "Why are there so many people asking for help and so little are saying that car is working fine?" Because mechanic workshops are for those that are having problems, just like forums are for people that have problems. Go to any forum and you will see the same story, 99% of people are there for solving some kind of problem and 1% is there for pure pleasure.NeBlackCat wrote:people tend to report problems more than successes), that 4.0 is not yet fit for purpose.
For every x.y.0 release it is expected to have more problems comparing to the x.y.2 or x.y.4 etc release. If you will have this for home use, then you probably can take some more risk that in enterprise environment. If I were you and starting with new virtualization tool I would start with v4.0 and create one virtual machine and install one operating system as guest and try it out. If it does not work for you, report a bug to VirtualBox public bugtracker: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Bugtracker or/and ask on this forum for help. A lot of times there are also work-arounds.
That I would do if I were you, but I am very happy v3.2.x user without having problems and in this stage of my projects I really need stable environment which I already have without of taking any additional risk, so I have decided for now to wait for 4.0.2 which will probably be out in a month or maximum two months according to usual release schedule and to my project to finish and I can take little more risk with new version.
But you will never know if it works for you if you don't try it out. There is also no guarantee that you will have less problems with 3.2.x.

Yes, I agree with all of that. I'd hoped there'd be a few "I'm running 4.0.0 and its great" posts though - I guess there must be some users who drop by after a major release to keep an eye on developments and others' experiences.
Like a moth to a flame, I have downloaded 4.0.0 and am trying it now.

There were some reports in "Discuss the 4.0 release" that it runs successfully for some users:
