Recovering a discarded snapshot

Post by Melab »

I have VirtualBox 3.0 and I discarded an intermediate snapshot such that the VM has been reverted back to the state of snapshot before that. I realized I made a mistake and I want to know if it is possible for me to recover this discarded snapshot. That is, does it completely wipe it from the disk in the same manner as if I had used a program that makes files unrecoverable or does it just delete in a manner similar to deleting a file from the trash bin?

It basically deletes the file as you would when you use the file manager. But the message box that you get also says that once you do it, you won't be able to go back. This is basically due to the XML file changes. Since that file isn't removed, you have no chance to recover the snapshot. So even if you get the snapshot file back through file recovery, it's useless anyway.
