How to prevent VB from loading with Mac OSX?

Post by OneCatFamily »

Hi guys,

I'm a long-time VB user, but every time I have the same problem with each upgrade: VB loads when OSX boots, but it seems to create a noticeable lag on the OS's startup; I've booted repeatedly in verbose, and each time I can see my system hanging for almost thirty seconds right before the VB kext are loaded. Right after that, the system startup proceeds nicely, but before that, man, is it long!

So, long story short, and barring from re-installing Parallel ($$$$...), I'd like to find a way to prevent VB from loading during startup AND be able to use it! I've tried to remove the VB plist file from StartupItems once, and I just couldn't get VB to launch. I had to reinstall it to make it work...

Ideas, anyone...?

Edit: I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.5)

I wish!!! Alas, VB loads first at kernel level, and you don't even get to see it in System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items... You have to go to /Library/StartupItems to find the .plist startup parameters file, the sh script and a resources folder that contains a .strings file, presumably for localization. I suppose VB doesn't install on all machines exactly the same way. I'm going to reinstall it and choose "Custom" in the install procedure, just to check where files and folders get written to disk. Thanks for your reply anyway! Merry Christmas!

I thought from previous installations that you could choose to let VB start along with the guest OS or not, but maybe it's different with 4.0.x, because I have reinstalled VB, and I didn't get much of a choice... Anyway, there's still a big lag before VB kernel extensions load, as I've noticed while reading boot logs in Console. Is there anything I can do at all...?
