I'm trying to put Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I loads and starts but then says

can anyone help me fix this and get my VM running?

I forgot to add that the purple background screen actually loads but never gets to the install / run off CD screen before giving me this message.

Post the hosts configuration and the version of VirtualBox as well as the guests log file (as an attachment)
Also change your profile to say that you have the PUEL version as I doubt you compiled VirtualBox yourself.

I have exactly the same problem. I am using the latest versions of Ubuntu 10.10 and VirutalBox 4.0.0, downloaded yesterday and today respectively. The error reported by williamss159 occurs under both scenarios below:
- Using the DVD as source
- Using the ISO image file as source

My host OS is Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
My DVD/CD drive is SATA, and so are the HDD's.

The VirtualBox log is attached.

Have you installed the Extension Pack? How to install Extension Pack
Try that and see if it works for you.

I installed the Extension pack. The issue persists.

Perhaps this is a Ubuntu distro issue. Discussions there point to issues with particular CD/DVD drives. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1598415

I tried the Windows VIrtual PC as well... and the same problem *seems* to exist there... couldn't read the error message, since the Linix window disappears before I can read the error message.

Not if you want to install Ubuntu or any other distro.

You might have a defective download. I have install Ubuntu 10.10 on several machines as guest and have never had this issue, so it is doable.

I have Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu and Xubuntu 10.10 and Linux Mint 10 installed in VirtualBox 4.0 without a problem.

That was it... I had a bad download. Thank you for your help.
