Creating a Alias/shortcut directly to a VM from Desktop

Post by skpnsf »

I'm unsure if this is possible. how does one create an alias/shortcut directly to a specific VM so one can open that VM without having to open the main Virtualbox UI first?

Wait for the final of 4.0.0 or get the beta. It has such feature now. Right click on a VM, then 'create shortcut on desktop'.

Does not Work on OS X. Simply creates a link to the XML file.

If you're on a mac, you can get VB 4.0 to create a shortcut to a VM by doing the following:

1. First right click on the VM, and select Show in Finder.
2. Right click on the .xml file that describes the VM. Select Get Info.
3. Then select, open with. You'll need to select 'other...' and then select Virtual Box. You'll likely need to also click the 'All Applications" and "Always Open With"
4. Close all those windows.
5. Lastly, create the alias on the desktop by right clicking the VM in VB and selecting 'Create Alias on Desktop'.

Clicking on the alias should work now. You'll need to repeat this process for each VM. Hope that helps.
