Move/Copy VirtualBox from Mac OS X to Windows?

Post by b21137 »

Hi,

Primary host Operating System is Mac OS Leopard.
Guest Operating Systems used with VirtualBox is XPs.

Is it possible to move/copy Guest Operating Systems from Mac OS X to Windows XP Operating System?

Thank you

Yes, provided you prepare the XP image for migration, as some host differences will be visible to the guest (CPU type for example). The easiest way is to first delete "intelppm.sys" from the drivers folder in the XP guest, and also run the MergeIDE utility. Then you can copy the VDI file to a new host and create a new VM around it. Make sure that the new VM settings are IDENTICAL, pay particular attention to MAC address, IO APIC setting and IDE controller type.

All of this assumes that you have not used snapshots. If you have then you're stuck (if you were an expert you could maybe do it, but an expert wouldn't be asking the questions you just did).
