Can't enable desktop effects in a Kubuntu 10.10 guest

I'm having problems activating Desktop Effects in Virtualbox e.g. Desktop Cube, wobbly windows - Kwin reports they are not activated.

So it's a Windows 7 64 bit host running a guest of Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit, Kubuntu updated to latest patches and software updates, running in Virtualbox 3.2.12 r68302 PUEL,

128Mb Vram & 3D acceleration selected, 2D not selected

Guest additions software installed by .... sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-x11 - have also tried the version in the Virtualbox installer

dkms is latest version

After guest additions installed - screen resolution goes to 1920 x 1095 - so some effect from guest additions

But when trying to enable Desktop effects - rotating cube and wobbly windows etc won't activate

I have tried the same process with Ubuntu 10.10 and Linux Mint on same machine and same version of Virtualbox - in those desktop effects like wobbly windows, rotating cube etc work AOK. So it seems to be a Kubuntu specific thing.

Any ideas on a solution?

Compositing with KDE does not work in VirtualBox. You would need to switch to using emerald for your DTM. I know this is not what anyone wants to hear but that is the way it is.
