Win7 help: fixing a win7 image that won't boot

Post by rkleemann »

Hi,

I was discussing this in another topic but thought it would be best to start up a new topic specifically for this problem.

I have a vhd image with win7 that won't boot, and I'm trying to figure out a way to maybe install win7 MBR on it.

The reason it won't boot is because the image was made off a win7 installation which is part of a Ubuntu dual-boot. What I did is from dual-boot, I booted into win7 and then ran disk2vhd on that in order to get a vhd image.

Then I created a new VM in VB attaching this vhd image of win7. When I try to boot, it throws me into grub rescue instead of booting.

Any ideas how I can install the win7 boot manager onto this existing image?

Thanks
Ricardo

Get the W7 install disc, boot the VM with it and restore it's MBR. Another method is to manually start W7 using the Grub command line and use F8 for boot rescue.
