removing a virtual machine
If I remove a virtual machine, does that automatically free up the space formerly used by that OS's installation?

No, you need to go into File | Virtual Media Manager and remove (delete) the virtual hard disks as well. Make sure you only delete the ones you don't need, because once they're gone... they're gone.
