Why does VirtualBox ask what the Guest OS is?

Why does VirtualBox ask what the Guest OS is?

Does it change anything or simply to show a nice icon on the GUI?

Some settings of your new VM are set according to best fit to the selected Guest OS.

So, no change in the actual VM, just the initial settings? (RAM, video, sound, network, etc?)
