Cannot connect to internet

Post by pigsie »

I am running virtual box 3.2.8. r64453
Host operating system is OSX 10.5.8. connected to my network using wireless

Guest operating system is windows 2008 R2 Enterprise

I'm using a bridged connection
Guest operating system is using DHCP - set to pick up an ip address from my router automatically
DNS server is set to automatic in windows

I have been able to connect to the internet in the past with this virtual machine, but last time I used it was around 6 months ago.

For some reason I cannot connect to the internet on my guest OS.

I can ping the router.

My virtual machine has the IP address: 192.168.1.20

I'm using a Vigor 2600we router

If I do an ipconfig /all I get the following:

This machine is part of a domain xxxxxxx-dev in the office.

Anyone see any good reason why I can no longer connect to the internet?

The icon in the bottom right hand of the task bar in the guest os shows that I am connected to a private network.

Windows firewall is disabled.

My router is set to control access based on mac address and has both the mac address of the vm and the host on the
allowed list.

Any pointers greatly appreciated!

I'm experiencing the same problem with a Windows 7 pro 64-bit guest. I get an IP from the router and even resolve domains, but actually getting out to pull up a page is sporadic at best.

Pigsie, have you tried without the MAC filterting or NAT setting on the VM?

Risc427, does your network have a proxy server that you require to use?

Hi Sasquatch. I'm not sure I understand what you are suggesting. In the preferences under network I can select one of the following

Not attached
Bridged
Nat
Internal Network
Host only

Are you suggesting that I try another option other than Nat or Bridged?

Thanks

So NAT doesn't work either? Do you have a router/switch/access point that uses MAC filtering/security? Have you also tried various network troubleshooting to find out how far you can get? The VirtualBox FAQ has a few hints, which basically involve ping to IP and hostname. You can also use traceroute along with ping.

Sasquatch

Thanks for your help. I seemed to have resolved my problem. Firstly I do have MAC filtering although the mac address was on the allowed list in my router control panel. I disabled this just to be sure although I don't think this had any bearing
on my issue.

Next I tried a tracert and pinging various domains all of which worked fine, no dropped packets.

On a whim I tried browsing to a few different sites other than google.com and microsoft.com and discovered that some websites were coming up okay but others were not. I checked the dns server settings for the VM and it was set to automatic so on a whim I set it to googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4.) and this has appeared to solve my problem. Not sure why though but hopefully this helps others.

Thanks again!
