Quick question - can I do this?

I have a brand new Dell computer that I bought with the Windows7 64 bit Home Premium operating system already on it. It comes with no installation disks for the OS, just for drivers. The only disks you can make for the OS are restore disks. If I make a virtual machine on my computer, can I use this OS that I bought with this Dell computer on the virtual machine I create in the computer that I bought?

Licensing issues aside (OEM does not allow it to be used other than on the machine of original install and not copied) I have never seen it work. That's why they call it a restore disk.

Linux is free. You might even like it once you learn how to use it.

Well I have specific Windows applications, and as far as I know, where there my be substitutes, Linux won't run the applications I use.
Though I am looking into Wine as a way to run windows apps in Ubunto....

I'm going to give it a try. I started out with unix about 20 years ago. With that Wine emulator, it might be painless ( yea right!).

Ubuntu should be easy. Just take your time. It will come back to you and I can tell you that it is much easier than UNIX was to learn.
Most everything is point and click these days.

WINE is only usable in Version 0.7L (Red Edition) with a wife and a goood diner

I'm a big fan of Wine, but I have to say: fat chance. If you view Wine as a platform to which vanilla Windows apps can be painlessly ported, or as a standard which if you adhere to then your apps will run on both Windows and Linux - then Wine is great, and that's how I see it. Relying on Wine to run an arbitrary Windows app that hasn't been targeted at Wine... well lets just say that my confidence is not high.
In fact VirtualBox would IMHO be a much better bet as a way to run Windows apps on a Linux platform.
