Linux guests spontaneously abort in 3.2.10 Mac OS X host

Post by penyuan »

Hello,

In the past month or so, the Linux guests that I have would spontaneously abort/close in the middle of a session (I have VirtualBox 3.2.10 in Mac OS X 10.6.5, thought this problem appeared when I was still using 3.2.9, and 10.6.4). Often this is during startup of a Linux guest, but it has also happened during regular use of the guest, like word precessing, web browsing, etc.

The Linux guests I have include Ubuntu 10.10, latest Arch Linux, SME server, and SliTaz. This is becoming very annoying, and I have no idea why. Is this a known problem, and is there a way I can solve it?

Thank you very much.

P.S. My Windows XP SP3 guest DOES NOT spontaneously abort.

This is normally due to the allocated memory and either a lack there of or a collision with protected memory.
Please post the hosts resources and the guest settings.

I have the same symptoms on occasion with various Linux guests. It seems rather infrequent and random in my case. I do know at least twice, one of my guests crashed when it tried to play "You've Got Mail" in FF when it was just sitting there. It also doesn't do it all the time. A couple times a guest would just crash right clicking on the desktop. It seems very random as I said.

In my case I'm running an iMac 5,1, 3GB ram w/128MB video ram, none of my guests are set larger than 1024 MB with 32MB video ram.

btw, I do know there are various extensions for the Mac that will cause VirtualBox all sorts of issues. One in particular is CCI which makes the Mac "pretty". It would crash guests on a reg basis. Also Astounding Stereo Expander used to crash guests on occasion but the latest version seems to be fixed. But who knows?

Seemingly "innocent" extensions that one would never expect to cause a problem with VirtualBox can and do. And cause subtle problems for the Mac itself on occasion.

What someone could do is create a new user with no extensions and test VirtualBox that way and see if they still have the same problem. You do need to make sure any extensions used "for all users" are disabled for the new user acct.

hi,
same here. linux guest quits, in the main window (listing all guests) there is 'aborted' status. if i restart repeatedly, in the end it starts. i have not noticed any other problems with my machine.
my config:
macbook 3,1 (cpu 2ghz, ram 4gb), mac os x 10.6.5
guest - latest centos 5 64bit, ram 1024, video 12mb
definitely not a problem with insufficient memory on my side

if you need more info, i would be more than happy to provide.

cheers!

try running vbox through the commandline and see if it exits with an error.

I'll post guest settings, but what do you mean by "hosts resources"? Thanks!

I am not experiencing these issues and I have been running my configuration for a long time and use it every day. My setup includes the following:

MacBppk Pro 8 GB RAM OS 10.6.5

VirtualBox 3.2.10
Guest OS OpenSUSe 64 bit
Guest RAM 4GB
Guest Video RAM 12MB

I have turned off 2D and 3D off.

Most of the things I run with guest os is Oracle software like Database and lots of java processes. I use XFCE desktop.

Just tried it a few times. All my Linux guests would still spontaneously abort (usually during startup) with NO commandline error messages.

ok, I would recommend the following.

1. disable networking, usb, shared folders and audio. Keep the configuration to minimum.
2. disable 3d suport.
3. configure ONLY 1 CPU
4. boot and run guest additions.

try this and see if the problem is gone. If the issue still shows up check the /var/mesages log and also VBox log for any hints what is happening.
