Is it possible to clone 2nd virtual Monitor on Windows XP?

Post by erhardm »

Hi

Host: Ubuntu 9.10
Guest: Windows XP

I want to clone the second (virtual) monitor in Windows XP. Is this even possible? I want to clone it as it is the external monitor for an laptop. Usualy Intel, ATI and Nvidia drivers give you the choice to do that, but having 2nd virtual monitor I can use it only as extended but not cloned.

Purpose:
I have a big 24" screen and sometimes I don't need the whole screen to be used only by the VM but also with other things.
I want to have the primary screen to be set at a resolution (ex.1024x768) and the 2nd (virtual) screen to be a CLONE at another resolution(1280x960) -- the second screen will be kept on another desktop workspace.
This way I can have half of the 24" workspace the documentation and references and the other half the primary VM screen(1024x768) and when I need a bigger workspace on the VM I will switch with CTRL+ALT+UP/DOWN/RIGHT/LEFT

If you know a better Idea how to achieve this please tell me

Default Windows should be able to do that without the need of special drivers or something. But that might be something on Vista or W7. I haven't used dual monitor with XP often, so I just checked and you're right, there isn't such an option. But there are tools that allow you to do that, like UltraMon.
