unmountable boot volume -bsod again

Post by andreaconsole »

Hi,
I found a couple of topic regarding this problem, but none of them was resolutive for me.
I have a windows xp guest on a windows 7 host. I'd like to use that VM fron my kubuntu 10.10 partition.
I tried to create a new virtual machine pointing to the vmdk file on windows partition (it's fully accessible for my user), but when I try to start it I get that annoying BSOD and the system start rebooting indefinitively.

What can I do to solve this problem?
Please, since I'm a newbie, try to be simple and clear.

The BSOD is caused by a hardware change with the guest can't cope with. Check the disk controller type used on the original VM (click on controller, note "Attributes" on right hand panel) - then make sure that the new VM uses the identical disk controller type. If that fails then check every other VM setting, making sure it is identical to the original VM.

Hi mpack, thank you for your clear answer!
Indeed I checked the two configuration and I'm sure they are exactly the same.
There are just two difference between the two:
-In windows 7 installation, I use 3.2.10 r 66523, while on kubuntu one I have 3.2.8 OSE r64453
-In windows 7 installation, it uses direct sound while on kubuntu there is pulse audio

Are there any more checks I can do?

Not really, I said it all already. A BSOD isn't caused by dark magic, it's caused by a change of circumstances - a hardware change. If you can't pinpoint what that hardware change is when you're right there, then I doubt I can do from way over here where I am.
