Hi
I've got a VM running XP with Ubuntu as host OS. On the XP VM there is some software that is registered according to machine hardware ID. I'm having a lot of problems with the latest Ubuntu with crashes/freezes etc and am considering migrating to another distro. Once the new distro is installed along with Virtualbox, will the migrated virtual machine still have the same machine/hardware ID or will I have to re-register all my software?
Thanks
Machine ID

Re: Machine ID
The CPU maybe another on the new host.
The other hardware is the same.
It depends on your software. So check it yourself.

Re: Machine ID
Well I'd rather not check it myself, that's why I'm asking! Software has only just been re-registered and I don't want to go through the whole process again if I can avoid it.
The new host will be the same physical machine as it is now, it will just be the host OS that will change.

Re: Machine ID
Windows 7 activation is based on hardware UUID. When that changes, e.g. you move the VDI to a new VM, W7 will ask for reactivation because the machine/hardware UUID changed. You can hack the XML to match the UUID you had, but you can also use the VBoxManage command to set a hardware UUID. But if you just backup the entire .VirtualBox folder, you wouldn't have this issue nor need this work around.
