xp crashes installing ac'97 sound

Post by jeeper74 »

Every time I try to install the sound card in my guest xp, it will go through most of the install and then just flash and Virtual Box is gone. it powers down everytime. Then when I reboot my guest os, windows tells me it has recovered from a serious error.
Error signature:
BCCode : 1000007e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : F612046D BCP3 : F7A59A74
BCP4 : F7A59770 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1
there are two files it wants to send to microsoft i can add the text if it will help.

So like I said, when I reboot xp, it tells me the error recovery and then wants to install the new sound card again. I have tried all combonations in the virtual box for audio settings. I think there may be something wrong with xp but not sure.

Thanks for your help

That's odd, Windows XP has the audio driver shipped with it, and should be installed when you install Windows. You're saying that the audio needs to be manually installed _after_ Windows is already installed. And that causes a crash. Sounds to me you got a bad install source.

no, it is not xp lite. I am running xp pro sp3.

very possible something was removed from it when I got it.

I was doing some looking on the net for this problem and came across people having this error with the hda audio. I have not yet downloaded an hda install. I read that if you install that first and then the ac'97 it would work. that was not on a vm however but I will give that a try tomorrow and see what happens.

Instead of trying workarounds and odd fixes for a problem that is in the source, get a proper source first. If XP does not have the AC'97 drivers, you got a contaminated source.

I'm experiencing same issue with a perfect copy of Windows that I've used to install in hundred of computers.
I've used this VM with sound under older ubuntu versions when virtualbox was an innotek prodcut.
Windows contains AC97 driver but it crash in finishing installation.
I've tried in installing AC97 driver from Realtek source but it crash too.
I've tried in using Soundblaster 16 driver proposed in virtualbox but sound device isn't detected by windows.

I'm not really interested to find out a solution as I don't use sound on my VM.

I just want to give my opinion concerning the kind of answer we can expect from this forum.
I'm surprised that when someone take time to ask something in giving details as error message, the only answer he receive is "reinstall your OS with a correct copy".
Are we in virtualbox for dummies forum?
This is exactly the answer I use when I don't care about the question.
This is not a solution but the most famous workaround!
