trouble installing SME Server in VirtualBox

Post by jgribbin »

I am attempting to install SME Server in VirtualBox running on Fedora. SME Server is Centos v4.x based currently.

Shortly into the install, i start getting error messages telling me the install is having difficulty speaking to the virtual harddisk.

I do have a screen-shot, but rather than attempting to transcribe that ...

At the tail tail end of the error messages I am getting: 0x50 drive seek complete errors.

It finally does get past the error, but of course the install finally fails because it has no drive to install to.

Any hints?

Thanks,
Jim G

Never mind, I figured it out.

The current version of SME Server is based on CentOS 4.8. The more recent versions of VirtualBox seem to set up sata hard drives/controllers by default. CentOS 4.x does not seem to know how to talk to a sata drive system.

I had to delete the sata controller and add the hard drive as an IDE hard drive. It then installed fine.

I'm guessing that this will go away with the next release of SME Server (8) as it is supposed to be based on CentOS 5.5, and from what I can see on the Forum here, this should work.

Sorry for the bump on this topic, but it is confirmed.

For those who want a HOWTO here's how :

1. Create an entry for SME server in the Virtualbox manager.
2. Edit the settings for the SME server entry. Go to the Storage section. In the Storage tree section you'll see an IDE controller and a SATA controller entry. The SATA controller will have a *.vdi entry - delete this.
3. Highlight the IDE Controller section and create a new Virtual Hard Disk for SME to use.
4. Install SME server via the usual methods (CD/ISO image)
