Windows XP Guest on Mac OS Host: No internet on guest

Hello everybody!
I know that related problems have been discussed and resolved in this forum, and I´ve also read the FAQ, yet I am still unable to figure out what my problem exactly is. I run windows XP via VM as a guest on a Mac OS host. I checked the network settings in VM and the proxy-settings in windows XP according to the instructions of VM and the entries I´ve read here in the forum. Still Explorer and Firefox are unable to connect to the internet. Since I´m a total newb and not too familiar with most of the tokens used on this site, I´d glady appreciate if someone is willing to explain to me how to deal with this step by step.
Thx for yout time!

Well, the
VirtualBox FAQ mentions some basic tests for internet connectivity using the ping command. Did you try that? What were the results?

Yes I ran those tests, and the results were postive for internet connectivity. The browsers seem to be the problem for some reason...

sorry, the test I ran was not in any browser but in DOS which responded positive for connectivity. Like mentioned before, no browser connects to net regardless which test I try.

Also, when I check the Status of my LAN connection in Windows XP , the status says : connection activated, the transmission-rate is 100MBit/s

The ping commands mean that there is a positive connection to the internet without the need of a proxy server. Are you sure that you need a proxy? If you do need a proxy, is it set correctly? Does it need additional software or authentication?

In my company all computers connect to the internet via our server. I also talked to our admin-guy who handels those things, and he assured me (after checking back) that the proxy-settings are just fine. He as well is unable to figure out whats going on.

Then change the network setting of the Guest from NAT to Bridged and hook it to your physical interface. That should make it so that your VM is another computer on the network.

OK, I changed the settings to bridged, but how do I hook it to the physical interface?

I'm no expert here but, assuming the Mac you are running VirtualBox on can connect to the internet, if you are in bridged mode it's automatically "connected" to whatever your Mac is connected to. One thing to check since it's at a work location is the Mac firewall. If it's on you have to allow VirtualBox access in the firewall preferences.

Chapter 6 of the
User Manual explains that.

Contact your sysadmin again and ask him how the proxy is set up. It might require authentication or something. There is something on your network that is not doing the standard things, because the ping command showed you that there is proper connectivity to the web. It's just some security thing that is in place that's holding you back.

I contacted my sysadmin a couple of times and he checked any setting that could somehow cause this mess. He is clueless about the reason for it either and advised me to deinstall VirtualBox and to install it all again. That ain´t the clean way to get rid of the problem and it might just reoccur again, but right now I´m stuck and I really need to get this thing working.

Instead of reinstalling VB, I would create a new, clean VM and start from scratch with the guest OS. Even easier: get a Linux live CD or something and boot your Host with it. See how that goes. When you get that working, try the same on a VM that is set to Bridged and then on a Windows VM.
