Can't get XP guest to internet under Ubuntu 10.04 host

Hello all,

I'm pulling my hair out here guys. Absolutely nothing that I've seen only, from Google, from the forums here, anywhere,
actually explains HOW to set up internet in for an XP guest under an Ubuntu host. I mean truly explains how, not just
mentions example command line parameters specific to the situation.

I have Ubuntu 10.04LTS running an an Acer Aspire 7736z-4008, and must use a wireless connection because of my university's
internet policies. My VB version is 3.2.10. Guest is WinXP SP3.

Also, because of yet more policies, I must use NAT to connect the two.

Now I ask you all, HOW do I actually do this?
Every where that I've read on the subject says something different, and no where it seems gives a complete answer.

Thank you,
Bryan Knowles.

What I've tried so far:

1) On Ubuntu, in VB, I went to the XP guest settings and set the network adapter to Intel/PRO1000 XXX (where XXX is any of the ones that I've tried, each case yielded the same results).
2) Ubuntu, downloaded the Intel E1000 drivers from http://www.intel.com/support/network/sb/cs-006120.htm, then shared the installer with XP.
3) XP, installed the drivers.

Viewing my internet connections, it says I have "limited or no connectivity."
Running ipconfig produces the following:

Code: Select all

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area connection 3:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.20.83
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

In a normal setting all you need to do is use the defaults when setting up the guest.
Default sets up a NAT adapter for you and that uses your host connection (what ever it is).
That's it. Nothing more to do.
Now some things come into play is special situations like you describe. Some places filter MAC addresses or other tricks to limit what is connected to their network.
You may need to ask the locations administrator what you need to do to get this working in their network.
The only other way would be to setup your own proxy server between the host and the guest, but that is outside the scope of this forum and you would need to seek help from the hosts OS forum.
