Fedora 14 Blue Screens on XP host

Post by recobb »

I did a fresh install of Fedora 14 in a new VM. It goes through the normal boot process with the blue and white bar progressing across the bottom of the screen, then it switches to the shattered glass (?) blue GUI screen. Shortly after that, and before the login screen appears, it blue screens the whole PC. The error message is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I can boot into level 3, and I installed Guest Additions to see if that would help, but no joy. The VM is set up with 50 MB of video memory, 1.5 GB ram, and a 100 GB hard disk. The host machine is a dual quad-core Xeon with 12 GB ram, running XP. VB is 3.2.10 r66523

I had been getting very *brief* (I had to take my digicam and snap a pic as they went by in order to read them) errors related to IO APIC at the beginning of the boot process, but I Enabled IO APIC and those went away.
-------------------------
MORE INFO: I booted into run level 3 again and did a complete yum update, thinking perhaps that would fix it. (After saving a snapshot, of course!), I logged in again at level 3, then typed startx. The screen dimensions of the window changed, indicating it was loading the GUI, and a cursor arrow appeared (but did not respond to my mouse cursor). It was at the stage of a non-responsive cursor on a black window that the PC blue screened. This time the error message was SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and amidst the memory dump info were some addresses in ks.sys
------------------------
SOLUTION: Google on ks.sys and BSOD revealed it had something to do with audio, so I disabled the audio driver in settings, and that FIXED IT.

OK, so it didn't 'fix' it, but I know where to look now, if I decide I need audio after all.
