Windows - Change disk controller offline

Hello!

I can't boot a Windows XP disk from a dead laptop since the disk controller that it uses it's different from the PIIX3 that VB emulates.
Is there any way to change the Windows disk controller without actually booting it? Beacuse everybody tells to boot the Win and reinstall the driver Standard Dual channel PCI IDE controller, but I just can't.
I could boot a Win rescue disk (Recovery Shell it's called).

Thank you very much, I've been unable to find anything interesting.

David

You can change to PIIX4 in the storage settings of VirtualBox, if that is what it needs.
read the storage section of your VirtualBox users manual.

Already did! I don't remember the original disk controller where the guest was installed, it was a laptop.
It seems that used a very different driver.

Any ideas how to boot? I can't install drivers without booting and can't boot without installing drivers!

Thank you!

This would go into the category "move XP to different hardware", be it physical or virtual, the idea is the same and it's something we don't discuss much here, because it's borderline illegal. If the XP is an OEM one, then it's bound by hardware and trying to boot it on different hardware is a violation of the license agreement. We don't want to burn our hands on that.
