Hi

I have tried 3 virtual appliance images below with VirtualBox and each of them fail to load up.

* CentOS 5.3
* Solaris 10 build 8
* OpenSolaris 2009.06

I reach the boot loader, GRUB, however just after I receive kernel panics when it comes to finding the root disk.

This imply's that i'm missing a configuration stage, however i don't know what to do and would be greatful for some pointers.

CentOS 5.3 - 2.6.18-128.el5
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
Volume group "VolGroup00" not found
Unable to access resume device (/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01)
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'

This is how i configured the CentOS 5.3 image in VirtualBox.

* New and type in VM name
* Operating System : Linux
* Version : RedHat
* Base Memory Size 512MB
* Enable boot hard disk
* Use existing hard disk -> centos-5.3-x86.vdi
* Image was downloaded from here btw : http://virtualboxes.org/images/centos/
* Click Finish and Start VM and the it kernel panic's.

Solaris
Similar to above..

OpenSolaris :
reach grub, select boot, see OpenSolaris blue background and then the system reboots

Specs :
VISTA 64 bit SP2 + Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q3000 @ 2.5GHz + 8GB RAM
VirtualBox 3.2.10 r65523

You would be better of installing your own instead of an image from someone.
If you must use an image you need to find out the settings from whom ever you got the image from as they must match.

Do any of the images [CentOS 5.3, Solaris x86 10 Build 8, OpenSolaris 2009] from http://virtualboxes.org/images/ work for you ?

I don't use them. I build my own. It is not that hard. If you insist on using an image like I said you will need to make sure the settings are exactly the same as when they were created. That or you will need to mess around with the settings to get it to work. Have you asked the people that you got these images from what the settings should be?

I'm half way through installing Solaris, no problems so far and I don't expect any. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Now I am curious what is broke in those downloadable VM's, perhaps they are broken on purpose.

They are probably installed with certain hard drive controllers and Linux maps them different from each other. IDE vs SATA can go fine, but if it's installed on SCSI and you put it on IDE, then it will give this kind of problem. I had a similar issue with Debian where I moved from a virtual system where it was on an IDE controller to a physical system with a SCSI RAID config. Root wasn't on /dev/sda1, but on /dev/cciss/c0d0p1 or something. Had to boot a live environment, change fstab and see if it worked. It did, luckily.

I suppose have the same problem.
When I'd like install a new VM with solaris 10 under my Windows 7 32 bits show this error.

Could somebody help me? I don't known a lot of unix, but I need intall to test some funtionalities for VDI solution in think clients.

Your problem is not the same as discussed here, because here the OS is already installed. You're trying to install one, or have installed one just recently. This is inside VirtualBox already, instead of the base being outside of VB. If you get Grub errors, then there are a few possibilities:
- The setup program didn't register the OS properly in Grub;
- The Grub installation got interrupted before completing properly;
- This is meant to happen and you make the Grub config later, after booting manually first.

Get the installation documentation of the OS you're trying to install.

I just look the documentation, but everything shown after the boot.
In this case start booting and when say "stage 2 starting" but everything stop.

Some time before I install in this same notebook (but under Windows XP) and works perfectly.

Have some idea ???

You have to replace the SATA controler of the VDI image by an IDE controler and everything will be ok !
