Ok, I searched, but could not find any topics that covered this, so if this is a repeat, I apologize.

I am trying to install 32 bit XP Pro with SP2 in a VM on a Windows 7 64 bit host. After the license agreement screen I get a screen that states the installer could not find a version of Windows to upgrade from, and asks that I press enter when I have placed the valid CD in the drive.

I would be happy to comply except for a couple of issues

• I don't have any media for any older versions of windows.

• The CD I am using is NOT an upgrade version, it is a full retail version.

I have installed this copy many times before on other systems. It is a legal/real/authentic version, and has passed the windows activation on every machine that I have ever installed it on. The only difference that I can tell is that this package does say its an academic edition. I did purchase this at the university book store some years back, but I was assured then that it was a full installable version. Since I have successfully installed it on many systems prior to this, I have reason to believe this is true.

Any ideas?

Make sure that you are starting the install inside VirtualBox. It sounds like it is auto starting on the host.
The easiest way to make sure is to have the disk in the CD/DVD before you start VirtualBox. That way if it starts on the host you can close it.

I kinda thought of that, so I created an .iso file of the disk. Currently the VM has this iso file set up in the boot sequence, so when it starts up, it starts the install.
