VBox has problems with openSuSE 11.3

Excuse me, but my english is an old schoolenglish.
I hope you can read it and understand.

I have installed the VBox Version 3.2.8 on my Laptop.
My prob is, that I can install opensuse 11.3 with KDE or Gnome but after that the first reboot doesn't do.
OK I thaught and closed the virtual maschine by shutoff. After that I started the maschine again and took the installed system.
But now with ESC or F2, while I can see what the maschine is doing.
The maschine is loading to:

Code: Select all

System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot
Mounting sysfs at /sys
Mounting debugfs at /sys/kernel/debug
Copying static /dev content
and stops.
If I took the normal start or failsafe. It's the same problem.

The Logs

The logs are useless. Please use the attachment feature of this forum to post logs. Also include the full VM settings by using the command "VBoxManage showvminfo "<vm name>" --details" and use the code tag to keep it readable.

Hi Sasquatch.
Why the logs are useless? They are from the VBox Program. I have no files of them.
Here is that you want.

The part of the logs you posted are useless. We can't see the real problem from snippets. That's why you need to post the full log. You can save the log from the log viewer. Right click on the VM, then select log. There you will have logs of the last 4 runs. But check the following first:
IO APIC is turned OFF. For 64 bit VMs, this needs to be ON. Without this correct setting, it won't work and you will get errors.

I believe the problem is not only with OpenSuse 10.3, Its also with UBUNTU 10.10. I have installed both systems today and after running software update on both systems I now get random guest vm freezes. VB also stops responding. It happend in both Ubuntu and Opensuse guest OS's on a Windows 7 host machine (32 bit) with all default settings when we create a new VM.

Cheers

I doubt your issue is relevant here, especially if you mix OpenSuSE 10.3 with 11.3. Additionally, I have two Ubuntu 10.10 VMs and neither give any problems. But then again, it could be Windows going nuts on it, I use Ubuntu as host (also 10.10).

Well sorry but 10.3 was a typo. I'm talking about 11.3 otherwise it would not make sense.

Also I can asure you that the combination of Windows 7 32 bit has host, Virtual Box 3.2.10 plus Ubuntu 10.10 as guess, or Opensuse 11.3 as guess OS (32 bit for both), after updating these guess systems, VBOX becomes really unstable and freezes sometimes mid-boot, sometimes at logon screen, sometimes when I open firefox. There is no aparent common reason for the feezes.

I ahve more than 30 Linux guest OS installed for testing with many different versions of Ubuntu, Opensuse, Centos. The ones that I have not installed the latest updates works fine and does not freeze at all. These 2 versions with updates installed freezes. So far I'm now testing a Opensuse 11.3 without updating it and its working fine also. Im no expert but I can see a common denominator here: install of linux latest updates and something that is common to both Ubuntu and OpenSuse.

Cheers

Then we can say it's a Windows host issue. Now as to pinpoint the actual update that is the problem, check for updates and only update the kernel. See if that does it. If it doesn't, you continue with each update, one package at a time until the problem occurs.

Same issue as the OP. Using VB 3.2.10 on a Fedora 14 x86_64 host, I successfully installed an openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 guest, but when booting it it hangs in exactly the same place (Copying static /dev content). Only customization during install was creating a separate root account.

@robatino could you post a VBox.log as attachment please, i'm missing complete one in this thread ...

BTW Opensuse 11.3 64bit is running ok here on Debian Squeeze host

VBox.log from last attempted boot of openSUSE 11.3 guest. Had to forcibly power off.

In case someone still needs this...

I had the same problem with the 64 bit version of openSUSE 11.3 and this is what I found as a workaround from other forums:
(If your openSUSE virtual installation is stuck at the first boot, just close it and follow these steps)
1. At the boot screen just enter from your keyboard a space then "nopreload" (without the quotes). (This adds the nopreload kernel parameter). Then hit Enter.
2. openSUSE should now boot fine. Continue with the first boot instructions. When done and asked to log in, do so.
3. Now, in order to add the nopreload parameter to the kernel automatically, you need to edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst. I use mc (Midnight Commander - a very nice tool). This tool does not come with the distribution, so you need to install it.
4. Go to Install/Remove Programs (Yast2), search for mc and install it.
5. Start mc as root by opening a terminal, type in su, then enter the root password. Type mc and hit enter.
6. Navigate to /boot/grub, click on menu.lst file and select Edit (on the bottom part of the Midnight Commander). Make sure you do this correctly and exactly like this:
- under every title, at every line the starts with "kernel" go to the end of the line and add one space and "nopreload" (without the quotes). Then, select Save (from the bottom part of mc).
7. On the bottom part of mc select Quit to quit the file.
8. On the bottom part of mc select Quit to quit mc.
9. Close the terminal window.
10. Restart openSUSE and it should be booting fine.

Again, this is for the 64 bit version...

All the best!

Yes, it works now with the nopreload option - thanks. Googling indicates that it only affects 64-bit, and that it worked with the earlier openSUSE RCs but fails with the final release.

Edit: Should have mentioned that I had it working earlier using Fedora's KVM instead of VirtualBox, so the bug doesn't manifest on all "hardware". I deleted the KVM guest now that it's working in VirtualBox.
