Guest state not preserved

Hello.
I am trying to use VirtualPHPDev appliance. Everything works great except when I shutdown the guest using normal linux shut down process, the state of the guest machine is not preserved. When I reboot, I have the originally installed, virgin guest.
The bypass I use is to take a snapshot before I shutdown and then boot from the snapshot.
I have other guests running on the same virtualbox (Debian, WinXP, WIN7) and they work as expected - after reboot the are in the state in which they were shutdown.
What am I doing wrong?
