Changing snapshotfolder with system in on state

Is there a special reason why a system's snapshotfolder can only be changed when the system is off? All of the other settings under modifyvm are logical, they aren't things you would normally be able to change with the system turned on. But, the snapshotfolder specification seems to diverge from this consistent behavior. Is there a work around I could use for achieving this modification without shutting a system down?

Thanks

Be very careful!
Moving snapshots around when done properly is very dangerous. Trying to do it with the guest running or in a saved state is asking to loose it all.
AFAIK you must shut it down so the xml files are updated properly. Since these are the actual control files it makes since though that you would need to shut it down.

Actually these systems don't have any snapshots. I understand how moving snapshots around could present some problems. Fortunately I don't have any to deal with. What I am actually trying to accomplish is a controlvm savestate, which appears to utilize the snapshot folder as its storage location. Unfortunately I cannot savestate to the default directory that has been chosen, and I cannot change that location without taking the machine offline.

Is there anyway to modify the savestate/snapshot directory for a system that is on?

Thanks
