VM Crashes After Trying To Install Ubuntu NB Remix

Post by rb88 »

:? OS X Leopard running on Runcore SSD. Virtualbox installs fine and makes a VM for Ubuntu. But when I try to install from a Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 ISO image, it shuts down. After that, every time I try to start it up, I get the following error:

Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
Console
Interface:
IConsole {6375231a-c17c-464b-92cb-ae9e128d71c3}

I copied this out of the log:

39 HWACCM: No VT-x or AMD-V CPU extension found. Reason VERR_VMX_NO_VMX
00:00:06.240 HWACCM: VMX MSR_IA32_FEATURE_CONTROL=0
00:00:06.240 VMSetError: /Users/vbox/tinderbox/3.2-mac-rel/src/VBox/VMM/HWACCM.cpp(686) int HWACCMR3InitFinalizeR0(VM*); rc=VERR_VMX_NO_VMX
00:00:06.240 VMSetError: VT-x is not available.

I've repeated the machine creation and install processes several times over, with exactly the same result (does that mean I'm insane?) No, I'm no longer doing the same thing and expecting a different result! But I do need to obtain a different result somehow. Is there some obvious factor I'm missing? Or is some tuning under the hood necessary? :?

Thanks for any help!

I believe this is an issue with Ubuntu (Unity). Their new netbook interface. The OS is set to autologon and that will stop you cold in the gate. The next time you install make sure to take the tick out of autologon.

Then you can select the desktop to load instead of netbook.

Not going to help your (Unity) netbook interface but it will get to where you can install the guest additions. (don't forget dkms and build-essential)
Then you can experiment to see if you can get it to work. Also search launchpad. There are several reports there.

Most of what I am getting is the new xorg, unity, & the fact that it was never intended to be run this way is what is causing the bulk of the problem.

Thanks! - will try it if I can get that far.

Right now, I'm not getting far enough to check or uncheck anything - it fails immediately. Maybe I'll try dropping back to 10.04 - it was known to be stable and had the old interface. I notice that System76 netbooks are still using 10.04.

Will follow up with anything I learn. Appreciate the tip!

10.04 netbook does work but don't try update it or you will loose it to.

Also the netbook is i386 only AFAIK so don't try to install it with VT-x activated. Usually VBox knows this and does not engage it but not sure on a MAC.
