"Invalid Data in Configuration File" error w/ Software CD

Post by SOHOoffice »

I am trying to load a mailing software that is windows only; as soon as I put the CD in the drive I get the "Invalid Data in Configuration File" error... and nothing else. No error code, no additional info, nothing.

I am running winXP home but am wondering if this is a winversion issue or a VBox issue... how do I find out??

(day 2 of running VB - new user)

Are you seeing this from within the Windows guest? I can understand it if you are trying to see it on you MAC but if it shows this on Windows guest it usually means that the CD is corrupt. Can you see the files in a Windows PC? Was the mail software intended to be used in XP (home)? I seem to remember some that were made to operate on a server only or minimal XP pro.

I am seeing it within the guest, yes. The software is intended for WIndows XP Home and Pro. Further investigation and a sly phone call to the company suggested I need to make sure my VM is NTFS> I did that, and am still getting the same error. I explored the CD and navigated to teh setup installer - I am able to get the software to install "successfully" from there but it crashes at startup.

I tried to open the setup config file and it says it can't open the setup.ini file. Out of curiosity I tried to copy the setup and it says "cannot copy setup : the parameter is incorrect"

I feel like this still has something to do with FAT32 vs NTFS but I'm not sure how to fix it!

I have no idea what to tell you to do. It sounds to me like the program you are trying to install is the problem but since I don't know what the program is I have no further suggestions

It's called PostalMate by PC Synergy. It's windows-based, and I talked to the only person w/ tech support that uses a Mac and she said that she was able to get it to run in bootcamp.

Is a setup.ini file (in any program) reliant on they type or location of the system it's being installed on? (for example, running a virtual harddrive vs. booting into bootcamp and using the -actual- harddrive....)

It should not matter if you are using a MAC or not since you are trying to install it in Windows. Even though the host is a MAC it could be Windows or Linux.

I would think if it could run in bootcamp it would run in VirtualBox with Windows or any other virtualizer with Windows.
Point is the product is not installing, it is there product, and from the sounds of it they don't know what to do.
If I can get a copy to try I will see what I can find out.

I just got a reply back from PC Synergy and they say that if you install their product in Windows that is running in a virtualizer they will not be able to support your product. They state that their support staff has no way to do this. I suggest that you contact them direct and seek a remedy that will still allow you support.

I already contacted them, as I said, and spoke to the only person in their office that has used the software on a Mac. As I mentioned, she said she had no problem using it in Bootcamp. I am not concerned about technical support.

Thank you for your attempt. I appreciate the information. I will install windows on Bootcamp and see if I can get it to work that way, then get to my bootcamp drive via VBox instead. I was trying to avoid that because I don't have windows on disc at the moment. Thanks again.
