Windows XP not installing with ISO Image

Post by Lancer873 »

It took me a fair amount of time just to figure out I had to find a CD or download an ISO image of Windows XP for the installation medium, but now that I've finally done that, it still doesn't seem to work. It still goes to "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." I did select the ISO in the First Start Wizard, and I downloaded it right from Microsoft's website here. I don't really know what else to say... (aside from the fact that I am using the latest version and I have no idea if it's PUEL or OSE, I just clicked "downloads" and then "intel macs" under binaries) I'm fairly certain that I did the correct process to select the ISO file as the installation medium. If I'm using the wrong ISO file, would you link me to what I should be using?

The problem is you downloaded Service pack 3 including extra features. It is not a Windows XP operating system. You need to purchase a valid copy of Windows XP or download a free Linux operating system.

Ah, my bad. Thanks then! I managed to find the correct file now, and I'm just having it set up now.
(On another note, do you happen to know how I could check what version of VBox I'm using? I seriously have no idea if it's PUEL or OSE...)

If you have USB available, it's the PUEL. Easier: downloaded from the website here as pre-compiled package (.dmg), it's the PUEL version. The OSE only comes in source code for manual compilation. Most Linux distributions offer the OSE in their repositories.

It is not bootable

Post by Cool Dom »

It is not a bootable .ISO. First you have to have a other os to install it over. I had this same problem with a vista iso but i installed over xp.

I have get the message "FATAL: couldn't read the boot medium, system halted" when trying to install windows xp from mounted iso image (host os is mac osx 10.5.6)

I did anything said on forums and on the web in general, there is no way it would work. I tried to install mac os x changing the settings but the same error appears... hope someone can help...

If the guest is set to boot from the Virtual CD and you see this error, it is because the image is not bootable or is corrupt.
