Heavy CPU load on host with a linux guest

Hi,
for a legacy reason, I've created a Fedora Core 3 (yes 3!) guest on my up-to-date OSX Vbox. The virtual machine takes at least 40% of a cpu without any running process. Even after shutdown (system halted) VirtualBox use +40% of one core. The box is very slow... (15min of compilation in this guest, 4min in the host.)
My other guest (XP3, Debian ..) runs fine. So, is there a magic switch for this old linux ?
The special config I do to get it work is the PATA controller for the hard disk.
thanks a lot.
