Re: "Desktop effects could not be enabled" on Ubuntu 10.10 x64
OK I have read and studied the files provided and can not determine with any certainty that this is a fault of VirtualBox, Ubuntu, or both.
I know that on two of my hosts that work properly with the Ubuntu 10.10 guest and 3D effects are using nVidia graphics. One 32-bit Windows 7 and one 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04 The one that has a hard time is using an older nVidia card Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit no hardware-v. Even so the 3D effect works on it just slower then the Ubuntu 10.04 guest. I think that at this point given the problems that I have read on launchpad and related problems to the new xorg, I am leaning to that being the problem.
Further testing will need to be done but I think at this juncture there is little that anyone will be able to do in a short period of time. I suggest that one of you create a ticket in bugtracker , post the ticket number here so the others can add to the ticket and see what the DEVs have to say. I would also think that the Ubuntu forums, and launchpad would be another place to report this so you have all of your bases covered.
Now a question to all, do any of you have version 10.04 of Ubuntu installed on the new version 3.2.10 of VirtualBox and does it work properly. Mine does so I am assuming yours will too but it should be noted here as well.
One last thing and this is really important. When you post the ticket in bugtracker DO NOT forget to attach the log file and other information that they may need. You may reference this ticket in the post but you must attach the log file there.

for what it's worth. I can enable desktop effects in 10.10 running in VB 3.2.10 on a Mac host but, it does weird things like when I try to drag a window in one direction, it moves in the opposite direction. I turned them off. lol

Just started up my 10.04 32 bit install since installing 3.2.10. Had not started it up since I was using 3.2.8 with it. desktop composition was still working in it, still having the 3.2.8 GA installed on that image. Installed the 3.2.10 GA on top of it, and was still working until rebooting. Then doesn't work - could not be enabled. So my desktop composition works with ubuntu 32 bit 10.04 with VB 3.2.10, but with 3.2.8 GA left installed on it. If that tells you anything.

I tried it with Linux Mint 9 as well. was fine before the 3.2.10 guest additions but failed after they were installed.dave78ab wrote:Perryg wrote:

Sounds like a problem with the 3.2.10 video driver.

sometimes I really wonder what beta testers do. well wait, I do beta testing for certain products. I guess they do testing differently. (we are all beta testers)

Okay I just tried it at home. Running Vbox 3.2.10 with Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 this time with an Nvidia GTX 460/Windows 7 x64 host and STILL get the "...could not be enabled" error. I have no idea how you are getting it to work at all.

I see this, too.
When enabling 3d acceleration for the Ubuntu 10.10-32 guest, the movement of windows dragged with mouse goes only to the right site.
I disabled it - problem is gone.
Sys: Win7-x64, VB 3.2.10, Intel HD Graphics
Guest: Ubuntu 10.10-32

Rainer

It is clearly a regression introduced by guest additions 3.2.10.Now a question to all, do any of you have version 10.04 of Ubuntu installed on the new version 3.2.10 of VirtualBox and does it work properly. Mine does so I am assuming yours will too but it should be noted here as well.
Fixing the X 1.9 issue, probably broke something else...
Desktop effects do not work in 10.10,
and stopped working in my previously installed 10.04 guest the moment i installed 3.2.10 guest additions.
Host ubuntu 10.04.1 64bit, guests 10.10 64bit, 10.04 32bit, nvidia card
If any further information is necessary, please feel free to ask.

One of you that is experiencing this problem must file a ticket in bugtracker I would do it for you but I don't have this problem and it will not be reflected in my log files.
Be sure that you have turned 3D acceleration on in the guest settings and that you have extra effects turned on in the appearance section of Ubuntu Desktop.
Also I have compiz, compiz extras, and Fusion Icon installed. This might be another reason why I do not see your problems.

Have you tried a fresh install of 10.10 with NOTHING added but Vbox extras and then tried turning on Desktop Effects?Perryg wrote:One of you that is experiencing this problem must file a ticket in bugtracker I would do it for you but I don't have this problem and it will not be reflected in my log files.

Yes and I just finished a new clean install with nothing except (dkms, & build-essential) installed the GAs and booted. 10.10 started with normal effects.Have you tried a fresh install of 10.10 with NOTHING added but Vbox extras and then tried turning on Desktop Effects?
Changed to Extra effects and wobbly works. Shadow works. No complaints from Ubuntu at all.

Well you must be doing SOMETHING different since I can reproduce the issue on two different Windows 7 x64 hosts with different display adapters.Perryg wrote:Yes and I just finished a new clean install with nothing except (dkms, & build-essential) installed the GAs and booted. 10.10 started with normal effects.Have you tried a fresh install of 10.10 with NOTHING added but Vbox extras and then tried turning on Desktop Effects?
