Seamless mode no longer works

Windows seamless mode no longer works - the windows desktop background is no longer transparent, so I can't easily switch between MAC and XP windows.
Running virutalbox on an iMac w/Snow Leapord 10.6.4. Guest OS is Windows XP.
This started happening intermittently a few releases ago. I'm now at 3.2.8 and it never works correctly.
Any clues?
