Restore Reverts to last snapshot

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and have successfully backed up and upgraded numerous times but this time when I boot up my new virtual machine after install (I just attach the harddrive to anew machine) it opens a machine in that state of my last snapshot! I took one snap shot about a year ago and haven't used the feature since. It seems like there should be a a way to get around this. I still have my backup untouched so I can wipe any changes I made.

Does anyone know how to get VirtualBox to not revert to the snapshot? why would it do that anyway?

Thanks!

I just added that to my "famous last words" collection.

You can't easily move snapshot trees, and if you try it despite that then you had better be a VBox expert. In your case it sounds like you only attached the base image to the new VM. If the new VM made changes to that base image then you have likely killed your snapshot chain, so I hope you had backups!

Stop. Try to put everything back the way it was. Hope that it works. Investigate how to clone a snapshot and mount the clone (which is now a merger of all the snapshots) into a new VM. Do not ever again attach a snapshotted drive to multiple VMs. The ability to mount a drive in multiple VMs is a recent concession by the devteam - because it is unsafe and needs to be used wisely.
