Ubuntu 10.10 on Windows 7 x64

Hey all,

I'm a little new to VirtualBox and am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) on a VM, but with no luck so far.

I've followed the steps outline from various sources on the web, with slightly different configurations, but I always get the same error:

After launching the VM, the Ubuntu name will show up in the center of the VM, with the 4 dots underneath showing loading progress, one dot will load, then the VM goes to a black screen with:

(initramfs) Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squshfs) on //filesystem.squashfs

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Verify the checksum of the ISO. You're the first one that has this problem, so it sounds like an issue with the installation ISO.

Thanks for the reply, sorry it took so long for me to follow-up on this issue.

I'll check the checksum when I get home tonight. The ISO was obtained from the Ubuntu website though.

So I've downloaded the new release, ubuntu10.10-desktop-i386.iso, and checked the checksum:

59d15a16ce90c8ee97fa76211b7673a8

which is correct according to:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

but I still get the same mount problem.

Any ideas?

Odd. Since you'll be installing it, you can also grab the alternative installer disc and install with that. It's not as graphically pleasing as the desktop installer, but you will end up with the same system in the end.

I can give it a shot at least, to troubleshoot. It might help me find the root of the real problem.

I've also tried reinstalling VirtualBox. I suspect it's a problem with my installation/system, though I lack the technical savvy to figure out what.

Are you running the install ISO or did you burn it to CD?

Right now I'm running it off the ISO itself.

It seems like I may need to burn it to a DVD though based on what other users have been saying....

I installed it just fine off the iso. I looked up your error and it pointed to people that burned them to CD instead of DVD.
Is your CD/DVD using IDE in the guest settings or SATA? I read that the new version was going to support SATA but have not tried it yet. Which version of VirtualBox are you using?

3.2.10 doesn't support SATA CDROM as storage system. This might come in the next major release. Makes sense too, as it's a feature, not some bug fix ;).
