Host Gateway IP Deleted

My host gateway IP address is being deleted at random times when I am running VirtualBox and leave my computer long enough for it to go to standby.
The host is Windows 7 Professional, and the client is Windows XP Pro, in NAT networking mode. I use the VM to create a VPN connection to a remote domain.
This doesn't happen every time. It was happening quite frequently (almost every time I left it on standby for more than 10 minutes). A week ago, I deleted my host network card driver, removed the hardware from the device manager, re-added it and re-installed the host network driver. I didn't have any trouble for a few days afterwards, but it's started happening again.
I can't positively say that VirtualBox is the culprit but I've had no problems at all until I started running it, and its never happened when VirtualBox was not running. I also set up a static ip address for the host around the same time the issue started happening, but I don't understand how that could be causing the problem.
Please help. Thanks!
