Screen doesn't refresh fully in seamless mode

Post by Annorax »

Hi all,

I'm running host Windows XP and guest Kubuntu 10.04. I've installed Guest Additions and with some effort, it is now working fine.

My Windows taskbar is on the left side, and when I go into seamless mode, my KDE taskbar is on the bottom, which is good. When I load KDE apps or open the KDE taskbar and then minimize them again, a bit of the right of the window/popup still remains after it is minimized. Pressing F5 to refresh the Windows background makes the UI glitches go away.

My Windows resolution is 1600x900, 32bit, and the Kubuntu is scaling with the size of the window. Is there any way to resolve these glitches to have a clean looking desktop?

Seems to be an issue when you run 3D effects in the guest and run it seamless. Switch the guest to normal and see if the issue goes away.

I have disabled "3D Acceleration" but still see the problem. Is this what you were referring to?

Partly. Try switching the kubuntu desktop to normal. kubuntu (KDE) guests are more finicky about seamless.

Can you please elaborate? I'm a little new to Linux. I see "Desktop Effects" and those are disabled.

If the desktop effects are disabled you have done all you can do AFAIK.
As I said KDE does not like seamless and has problems. Some of it is directly KDE and some VBox and the way it draws the screen in seamless IMHO.
Try Ubuntu and Gnome and you will see what I mean. Works almost perfectly if you do not try to use effects. Even with effects Gnome works but the top bar is missing (if you use Compiz) on Windows and well that is not going to work.

I did install Ubuntu to Gnome and I still see the same behavior (effects set to None). It's almost as if the right 1/4 of any Kubuntu window or popup doesn't fresh, as it happens for apps or task bar menus.

Does anyone know how to resolve this? It appears to be either a configuration issue or bug in either my video drive or VirtualBox.

Almost every time when this happens it is either the 3D effects or the video card/drivers. I put this Quadro FX 880M problems in google and did some reading. It looks like other are having problems too. Have you tried to update your Video card drivers?

hello,

yes, I am aware that this post is over two years old.

I am having the same trouble on a win xp pro 32bit host with ubuntu 12.04 32bit guest and gnome 3 wm (not unity) in dual monitor mode. although seamless mode does work basically fine, everytime I move a guest window, I have to refresh/redraw the host desktop (f5) to get rid of these ugly residues.

any ideas? any progress in this matter?

cheers

An upgrade to v.4.2.4 (before was v4.1.18) solved the problem.

I use 2 screens in seamless mode (Windows 7 x64 Host, Windows XP guest). When I move a windows from screen 1 to screeen 2, the screen 1 is not refreshed (I'll see the Windows XP background + some fragments of the application window I have moved).
Graphic card is an ATI HD 4600 with the newest driver.

The problem got worse with virtualbox 4.2.4, earlier versions did only show the Windows XP background but without fragments of the application window.
