Windows 7 slowdowns, crashes while developing

I'm using Virtual Box 3.2.8 running on Windows Vista x64 (Ultimate). The guest OS is Windows 7 32 bit (Home Basic), which I use for software development in Visual Studio 2008 and GCC.

One major problem I have is that the OS starts slowing down. After running for a while (several hours, a day or two) everything slows down significantly. Typing anything causes visible refreshes, running programs take a lot more time. Shutting down and restarting is the only solution I found.

Another problem I have is that when running programs from within Visual Studio I sometimes get a crash at 0xffffffff, with a stack trace that doesn't make sense. (I'll be able to provide more exact details when this happens again.)

These are the two major problems I have. It also happens that copy/paste between host and guest stop working, but closing with saved state and reopening works, so that's less of an issue. I also had a couple of system crashes (showing a black screen with garbage).
